5. The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Adams Douglas

The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy book's cover page
About the book: This book starts with Earthling Arthur Dent facing the bulldozing of his house. This is due to occur in order to create room for a motorway bypass. Arthur's friend Ford Prefect comes along and tells Arthur three important things: 1) He, Ford, is an alien from Beetlegeuse; 2) He, Ford, is a writer for the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and 3) The Earth is about to be destroyed. Ford helps Arthur to escape with him on a Vogon ship. Unfortunately, the Vogons don't like anyone, and are particularly adverse to hitchhikers. Ford and Arthur are blasted into space to be picked up by Ford's cousin Zaphod Beeblebox. Zaphod and his earthling girlfriend - a woman Arthur once met at a party - have stolen a spaceship called the Heart of Gold. This ship runs on an improbability drive, meaning that when a button is pushed, the most improbable thing will happen. Zaphod and Trillian are using it to try to find Magrathea, which (according to legend) was once the richest planet in the galaxies. The group do get to Magrathea and are attacked by an ancient weapons system. Once again, the improbability drive saves them, and they land on the planet and start to explore. Arthur meets a guy by the name of Slartibartfast who tells him that the planet was home to the most intelligent computer of the all time. The computer was built by the inhabitants in order to find out the answer to the question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. The computer, after telling the waiting crowd that the answer was 42, commissioned the building of Earth in order to search for the actual question. Earth was destroyed by the Vogons, however, just before the question was found. The descendants of the creators of the computer, two mice, want to take Arthur's brain to look for the answer, since he was on Earth just before it was blown up. Arthur is saved by the gang and they all leave Magreathea on the Heart of Gold, heading to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe for some food.

About the book: The story begins in the nursery of Darling home, where Mrs. Darling is "sorting through her children’s minds" at bedtime. She is surprised to find that all the children have been thinking of someone named Peter Pan. When Mrs. Darling asks about this mysterious boy, Wendy explains that Peter sometimes visits them when they’re asleep. One night, when she is resting in the nursery, Mrs. Darling wakes up to find that Peter Pan has indeed come to visit. When Peter notices an adult in the room, he jumps out the window, but the children's canine nanny, Nana, traps his shadow inside the room. A few nights later, when the Darlings are dressing for a party, Mr. Darling quarrels slightly with the children and ties Nana in the yard, to everyone’s dismay. When the Darling parents leave for the party, the children are left unguarded, and Peter and Tinker Bell fly into the nursery. They are looking for Peter’s shadow, which Mrs. Darling had hidden away in a drawer. When Tink gives Peter the shadow, Peter finds that he can’t get it to stay on. His bitter crying wakes Wendy, who quickly sews the shadow on for him. Peter confesses that he has been listening in on the children’s bedtime stories so that he could repeat them to the lost boys. He asks Wendy to come with him to Neverland, where she could go on adventures and be a mother to all the little boys. Wendy hesitates, but finally agrees. Peter teaches all three Darling children how to fly and they set off to Neverland.

3. The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway

About the book: On the coast of Cuba near Havana, an old widowed fisherman named Santiago has been unable to catch a fish for 84 days. His apprentice, Manolin, has been forced by his parents to seek another "luckier" employer, although Manolin continues to help Santiago launch and retrieve his boat from the ocean each day. Manolin cares for the aging Santiago, bringing him food and clothing, and in return Santiago tells Manolin stories about baseball legends and his younger days fishing in a boat off of Africa. Every night, Santiago dreams of lions on the beaches of Africa. Early each morning, Santiago walks up the road to Manolin's family's home to wake him up for work. On the morning of the 85th day, Manolin helps Santiago launch his boat into the sea. Santiago rows over the deep well where he has been trying to catch fish for the past week and decides to try his luck farther out. Finally, in the early afternoon, he catches a ten-pound tuna, which he decides will be his meal for the day. Not long afterward, Santiago feels a hard pull on his line and realizes that a huge marlin has caught his hook.

2. The Giver: Essential Modern Classics by Lois Lowry

the giver's book cover page
About the book: The book follows a 12-year-old boy named Jonas. The society has eliminated pain and strife by converting to "Sameness", a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. Jonas is selected to inherit the position of Receiver of Memory, the person who stores all the past memories of the time before Sameness, as there may be times where one must draw upon the wisdom gained from history to aid the community's decision making. Jonas struggles with concepts of all the new emotions and things introduced to him: whether they are inherently good, evil, or in between, and whether it is even possible to have one without the other. The Community lacks any color, memory, climate, or terrain, all in an effort to preserve structure, order, and a true sense of equality beyond personal individuality.
